THE LAST GREAT PACIFIC FLATS

Fanning Island, known locally as Tabuaeran, is a remote coral atoll a little over an hour by air from Christmas Island. Its immense lagoon, ocean flats and tide-fed channels support a remarkable saltwater fishery with minimal angling pressure.

Large bonefish are a defining attraction, alongside giant and bluefin trevally, triggerfish, bumphead parrotfish and Napoleon wrasse. Fishing is predominantly on foot, with local boats moving anglers between flats and positioning them around the changing tide.

The atoll rewards careful timing. Isolation Outfitters considers moon phase, tide height and the movement of water through the limited channels when recommending a week, particularly for anglers focused on giant trevally. We normally limit groups to six anglers, helping protect the fishery and preserve the exploratory character of each day.

Fanning Island Lodge provides a simple beachfront base with traditional thatched buias, a communal mwaneaba, fresh water, solar power and Starlink. Trips normally begin and finish on Christmas Island, and a Fanning week can be combined with a second week at Ikari House for a complete two-atoll journey.

2027 HOSTED WEEKS

Hosted departures are scheduled for April 7–14, September 15–22, October 13–20, October 20–27 and November 10–17. The October 20–27 departure is our Advanced Saltwater Skills Week. Independent lodge weeks may also be arranged, subject to flights and access.

2028 RESERVATIONS

We are now taking provisional reservations for 2028, including preferred full- and new-moon windows. Early planning is recommended for private groups and anglers wishing to combine Fanning Island with Christmas Island.

AN ATOLL SHAPED BY TIDES

THE FLATS AND CHANNELS

Fanning’s immense lagoon is divided by long flats, shallow edges and channels that exchange water with the surrounding Pacific. Much of this water receives very little fishing pressure, giving each day a genuine sense of exploration.

The tide determines where the fishing begins. Incoming water draws bonefish onto newly covered feeding ground, while the channels and their surrounding flats create opportunities for trevally as water movement strengthens. Guides may change locations several times during the day to remain with productive water.

Most fishing is undertaken on foot. Boats provide transport between areas of the atoll, allowing anglers to cover contrasting flats rather than remaining on one fixed beat.

BONEFISH, TREVALLY AND MORE

Large bonefish are one of Fanning Island’s defining attractions, with genuine opportunities to encounter double-digit fish. They can appear as singles, small groups or moving schools across pale flats where careful presentations and controlled line management matter.

Giant trevally provide the atoll’s most explosive fishing. Bluefin and golden trevally, triggerfish, bumphead parrotfish and Napoleon wrasse add further variety, with each species requiring a different combination of tackle, presentation and restraint.

Some encounters develop slowly as fish move across a visible flat. Others happen within seconds when a trevally appears beside a channel or reef edge. Anglers should arrive ready to change rods and respond quickly when an opportunity develops.

GUIDES, BOATS AND TIMING

Groups are normally limited to six anglers, supported by three boats and local guides. Two anglers generally share a guide and boat, rotating positions and fishing individually once they reach the flats.

The guides read tide, wind, light and fish movement throughout the day. There is no fixed daily formula: a promising bonefish flat in the morning may give way to a channel edge for trevally as the water builds, followed by another area as the tide begins to turn.

Expert saltwater experience is not essential, but anglers should be able to double-haul and deliver weighted flies into wind. Careful preparation makes the fishing more rewarding, while hosted weeks add on-site support, additional equipment and help adapting to this demanding environment.
