For saltwater fly anglers seeking the outer edges of adventure, the Republic of Kiribati delivers one of the Pacific’s most remote and productive fisheries: Fanning Island (Tabuaeran). This pristine coral atoll, just over an hour from famed Christmas Island, is fast building a reputation as one of the world’s finest Bonefish and Giant Trevally fisheries.

Despite its isolation, Fanning Island is easily accessible via Honolulu, and we provide one week and two week programs on the atoll, plus a visit to Fanning Island offers the chance for a second week on Christmas Island before departing for home.

For those who want to spend days away from the beaten flats, a dedicated week on Fanning Island is as isolated as it gets. With minimal angling pressure and a pioneering spirit, guests can expect large, uneducated bonefish, shots at enormous GTs, bluefin trevally, bumphead parrotfish and golden trevally, this destination is still in its infancy.

We work with you to plan optimal dates for casting to bonefish on rising tides and with full/new moon activity to maximize your shots at the atoll’s renowned giant trevally.

Our hosted weeks on Fanning Island emphasize exploration, community interaction, and the thrill of discovering what lies beyond the next flat. There are long white sand flats that see little, if any, angling pressure in a year. We align our hosted trips to maximize moon and tides for optimal fishing during the entire trip duration.

Final 2026 Hosted Trip Date

Fanning + CXI Hosted Trip: November 2026

Due to heavy interest in our earlier 2026 hosted trips, we have opened up a final hosted trip from November 04 through to November 18, 2026.

The program is unchanged with us fishing Fanning atoll for the first week, then transferring back to Ikari House to fish the Kiritimati Lagoon on Christmas Island for a full seven days. This is a highly popular trip so please reserve dates promptly to secure your position on this expedition.

2027 Reservations

Ask us about availability for your week on Fanning Island. We can also create an itinerary for Thursday to Thursday weeks or two weeks on the atoll. There are a few full moon weeks still available (as at August 2026) so email or call us to hold your spot.

2027 Hosted Trip Dates

Trips are currently scheduled for April, September, October (two trips) and November 2027. Expect us to release other hosted weeks as the year opens up and we manage access to ensure the sustainability of this spectacular fishery.

The Last Flats – Fanning & CXI Combination: April 2027

Our signature hosted adventure blends a week on Fanning Island with a week on Christmas Island, and runs between March 31 – April 14, 2026. This offers anglers the rare chance to fish two distinct atolls in a single journey.

On Fanning, expect near-virgin flats, aggressive bonefish, and exploratory trevally opportunities in a setting where very few fly rods have ever been cast. Transitioning to Ikari House on Christmas Island provides a contrast of scale –vast lagoon systems, polished lodge operations, and access to the Kiritimati Lagoon’s endless flats — plus bluewater action if you choose.

Advanced Saltwater Skills Week – October 20-27, 2027

We are holding the week of October 20-27 open for individual anglers who want to participate in a week of learning while fishing with some special guests, including a guest chef who will work alongside our local staff to cook for us for this fun and informative week. A full range of beverages including craft beers, wines and spirits will be provided to match cuisine predominantly sourced from local island ingredients.

We will have premium rods, reels and lines available for all participating anglers to use, plus a free fly box (with flies) for every participant. This week is the same cost as for our normal program.

2028 Reservations

We are now taking reservations for 2028 and already have confirmations for some full moon weeks. We operate a more flexible policy for reservations over one year out so please call us early to hold any 2028 dates while we help plan your group itinerary.

2026 Fanning Island Trip Dates

If you’re looking for world-class flats fly fishing in a truly untouched environment, Fanning Island Lodge is the location. You’ll fly in on either Tuesday or Thursday and we only need to return back to Cassidy International Airport on CXI when you’re ready to head back to Honolulu, or Fiji, and onto home.
Expect to fish for double-digit bonefish, monstrous giant trevally, aggressive bluefin trevally, treasured bumpies (humphead parrotfish), napoleon wrasse and other prized species — all on the fly, all on foot with boats for transport to the flats and channels, directly from the lodge frontage.

We’re heading back to Fanning Island for a week in October 2026. This trip is for those who couldn’t make our ‘Last Flats’ hosted trip in April and is designed to be either one week on Fanning, or a two week back-to-back two-atoll adventure covering Fanning and Kiritimati.

We’ll fly into CXI on Wednesday from Honolulu. Then repack and head to Fanning on Thursday morning to fish the flats that afternoon.
With remote and un-pressured water, expect to fish for bonefish in the 4-7lb average class on Fanning, plus lone fish in the 8-10lb class. Equally, giant trevally will be of a larger average size and are more plentiful than back on Christmas Island.
After five days of fishing, we return to Christmas Island on Tuesday afternoon for our customary trip celebration and take the Wednesday morning flight back to Honolulu (US anglers), or Wednesday afternoon for those heading back to Australia/New Zealand via Fiji.
Second Week on CXI: There is an option to fish Christmas Island the previous week, or to stay on and fish CXI the following week, or even to stay on Fanning for an extra few days.

Then back to the well-loved bonefish haven of Christmas Island (Kiritimati) for a second week, where you’ll sharpen your flats game across CXI’s legendary coral edges and pancake white flats.
Over two unforgettable weeks, you’ll explore vast, under-pressured flats alongside a small group of like-minded anglers. Hosted by experienced fly anglers, this journey is fully planned, logistically smoothed, and all about maximizing your time on the water – from classic bonefish sight-fishing to adrenaline-fueled GT encounters. We will be bringing additional premium rods/reels/line for backup and to try out on the flats so don’t worry if you don’t have all the gear yet.

Fanning Island Lodge
Fanning Island – Thursday to Tuesday

If you have a small group wanting to fish Fanning Island, we may be able to accommodate you outside our hosted trip program.
Flights from CXI into Tabuaeran are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, but flights may not always be available due to engineering, scheduled 60 day maintenance, or pilot training, which happens offshore. We liaise with the airline to confirm flight availability before you confirm your trip.
We can help to align your stay with dates when the aircraft are flying, and the tides and moon meet your neap or spring requirements.
All internal transfers, meals and accommodation is provided plus expert guides, and the authentic Fanning Island experience of thatched huts, local provisions and isolated lagoon flats.
You can decide to stay on Fanning for five days (Thursday – Tuesday), seven days (Thursday – Thursday) or even 13 days (Thursday – Tuesday, plus an additional week through to the following Tuesday).

Week One on Fanning: We’ll fly into CXI on Wednesday from Honolulu. Then repack and head to Fanning Thursday morning to fish the flats that afternoon.
With remote and un-pressured water, expect to fish for bonefish in the 4-7lb average class on Fanning, plus lone fish in the 8-10lb class. Equally, giant trevally will be of a larger average size (35lb+) and are more accessible than back on Christmas Island.
After five days, plus two half days, of flats and channel fishing, and thatched hut accommodation, we return to the relative luxury of Christmas Island on Tuesday afternoon.
Second week on CXI: Staying at Ikari House, you’ll fish Christmas Island the second week, with access by fast boats and guided by highly experienced locals. Read our itinerary - some spots are still available.

We are hosting an Advanced Saltwater Skills Week on Fanning Island for beginner to intermediate fly anglers looking to improve their techniques and fish-catching skills.
This week runs from October 20-27, 2027 and is open for individual anglers to book now. This special week is the same fare as for our normal program, but with a lot of extras packing into this informative and entertaining week.
Participate in a week of on-water learning while fishing with some special guests. Premium rods, reels and lines will be available for all participating anglers to use, plus every angler will receive a free fly box (filled with flies to use on Fanning Island of course!) before you arrive.
We’re flying in a highly talented guest chef who will work alongside our local staff to prepare our meals utilizing local ingredients, seafood and whatever we can fly in with him. We’ll be matching this with a full range of beverages including craft beers, wines and spirits.
The week will include fly tying demonstrations, a session on careful fish handling and fish photography, plus some exploration of some lessor-fished channels on the island.

Late last year, we announced this hosted week on Fanning Island (combined with a second week on CXI, based at Ikari House), due to growing demand to access this fishery.

This hosted trip has five confirmed anglers, but now with one rod now freed up due to a change in our guest’s personal circumstances. Please advise your interest in this last spot urgently.

November 04 – 18, 2026

We have opened a final hosted 2026 expedition to Fanning Island for 2026, combined with a second week on Christmas Island. This November trip dates align with the best November moon and tidal conditions.

If you and your friends or family want to fish on Fanning Island, this new hosted trip offers the best chance to explore the atoll before we wrap for 2026.

Please advise interest in any group dates for 2027 as we are currently locking down weeks for returning groups and for our hosted trips. All dates are subject to the local airline confirming their 2027 flight schedule with us.

Currently we have one week available for most months in 2027, apart from October, due to our Advanced Saltwater Skills Week immediately after a hosted week on the atoll.

April 07 – 14, 2027

We still have some spaces available for our April ‘27 Last Flats expedition. Come on this hosted trip and experience this incredible remote GT fishery. Chase bumphead parrotfish and the atoll’s oversized bonefish. It’s truly a remarkable saltwater destination to experience at least once in your life!

September 15 – 22, 2027

This trip is fully hosted, and with a range of premium brand rods matched with Scientific Anglers lines for our guests to trial during the week. We’re offering an overnight Channel Campout option for the most adventurous of our guests at no extra charge. All camping and cooking equipment is held onsite at Fanning Island Lodge. Maximum of six anglers.

October 13 – 20, 2027

We’re back on Fanning Island for this second week in October 2027. Strong tides and full moon on Saturday 16th maximizes anglers’ opportunities for giant trevally. The coastal lagoons will be pumping water and parrotfish. The GTs will be looking for big prey. Bonefish will be moving through the channels and covering fresh ground on the flats. If you’re an experienced saltwater angler, this week is for you.

October 20 – 27, 2027

Advanced Saltwater Skills Week. Limited to seven anglers for this week. We will have a guest chef and hosts available. Premium tackle, fly tying demonstrations and cultural entertainment. This will be a fun week to explore Fanning Island.

November 10 – 17, 2027

This week is available for single anglers and pairs. Full moon is on Sunday 14th. Seven spots are currently available for this newly listed week on Fanning Island. Don’t miss out on our last hosted week for 2027!
