Stay in a quality lodge and fly out for the day, returning for dinner and a comfortable bed. Spend a night or more in a backcountry hut or riverside camp if you choose, with time to explore farther along the river. Your itinerary can combine both, bringing lodge comfort and wilderness overnights into the same fishing program.
We plan the dates, duration, locations, and balance of flying and fishing around your available time, experience, fitness, and interests. Helicopter access is central to the trip, with guiding, accommodation, and ground connections arranged around it. The choice of water and daily plans reflect seasonal conditions, weather, and access, with the walking involved discussed before you travel.

SIGHT FISHING FOR WILDERNESS BROWNS
We fish South Island wilderness rivers and tributaries where helicopter access is the most practical way in. Their isolation helps limit angler pressure, giving us opportunities to explore clear water for large wild brown trout.
Your guide searches ahead, spotting fish and helping you plan the approach, fly selection, and presentation. Accurate upstream casting, including into wind, is valuable preparation. Large browns can be wary and demanding; a carefully placed first cast often matters more than covering water quickly.
Expect to fish on foot, walking riverbanks and wading between productive stretches. Some days involve substantial ground, so we discuss your fitness and experience before choosing the water. Depending on the river, the day may include smaller tributaries, backwaters, or a high-country lake.
FLY IN. MAKE THE MOST OF THE DAY.
Helicopter transfers shorten the approach to remote streams, leaving more of your day available for fishing. From your lodge base, fly into the backcountry with your guide and return after a full day on the river. The flight through the South Island’s mountains and valleys adds another dimension to the experience.
We coordinate drop-off and pickup locations around the fishing. Where conditions and access allow, you can be dropped downstream and fish your way upriver toward the collection point. Your guide carries satellite communications to coordinate the pickup and receive weather updates.
The final river choice depends on weather, water conditions, and flight access. We have fishing options on both sides of the South Island and discuss travel flexibility when planning your itinerary. A hut or camp overnight can also be included if you want more time exploring one river system.
A LODGE BASE CHOSEN FOR YOUR RIVERS
We choose your lodge around the planned fishing locations and helicopter logistics. The aim is to put you in the right place for the water, with a comfortable base to return to each evening.
Meals showcase New Zealand produce through exquisitely crafted cooking, giving visiting anglers another way to experience the country. After a day walking and wading, return for a hot shower, dinner, and time to discuss the next day’s fishing with your guide.
Before you arrive, we discuss dietary requirements, provide a packing and tackle list, and identify any equipment you need us to arrange. For wilderness overnights, we provide the hut or camping equipment and plan meals separately from the lodge stay. Your itinerary sets out the accommodation, transfers, guiding, and inclusions for your particular trip.

DATES, EQUIPMENT & TRIP ARRANGEMENTS
PLANNING YOUR NEW ZEALAND HELI-FISHING TRIP
WHEN TO COME & HOW LONG TO STAY
Our heli-fishing program operates from November through March, with dates and river locations arranged individually. Tell us when you will be in New Zealand, how many fishing days you have available, and whether you prefer lodge stays, wilderness overnights, or a combination.
Your trip can include daily flights from a lodge or several days exploring a river from a hut or camp. We recommend arriving at your agreed lodge or departure base the day before your first flight. If heli-fishing is the main purpose of your visit, allow additional flexibility around the fishing dates in case weather affects access.
YOUR GUIDE & FISHING EXPERIENCE
Our usual fishing arrangement is two anglers with one professional guide. Private trips for a single angler are also available; tell us your party size so we can discuss suitable guiding and helicopter arrangements.
The demanding trophy-water fishing described here is best suited to experienced anglers. Confidence casting upstream into wind, accurate presentation, and following your guide’s directions will help you make the most of each opportunity. Before the trip, we discuss your experience and fitness and provide specific casting exercises to work on.
Helicopter access gets you to the river, but the fishing still involves walking and wading. Be prepared for uneven ground, cool starts, and potentially long days on foot. We select the fishing program with those demands and your capabilities in mind.
WHAT TO BRING & WHAT WE CAN SUPPLY
Bring supportive wading boots with non-felt soles, quality polarized sunglasses, and your preferred fishing tackle. We typically wet-wade, with chest waders available when required. Your trip-specific packing list will cover clothing, weather protection, and tackle for the planned water.
We can provide or arrange rods, reels, lines, flies, and other equipment you need. Let us know what you intend to bring before traveling so we can identify any gaps and confirm what is supplied, loaned, or purchased for your trip.
HUT & CAMPING OVERNIGHTS
Typically we return to our lodge base, but if you choose an overnight in the wilderness, we supply the necessary hut and camping equipment. Our camping inventory includes MSR three- and four-season tents, down sleeping bags, inflatable sleeping mats, cooking equipment, and stoves.
Meals, snacks, and beverages are planned before departure, including dietary requirements and allergies. You receive a specific gear list for the overnight portion, so you know what to carry and what we provide.
ARRIVAL, TRANSFERS & DAILY ARRANGEMENTS
We agree on your pickup and drop-off locations while planning the itinerary and can arrange connections from New Zealand towns, cities, or airports. Your confirmed schedule identifies the transfers and accommodation included before and after the fishing.
On lodge-based fishing days, we coordinate the departure, river drop-off, packed lunch, and afternoon collection with your guide and helicopter operator. For hut or camp stays, equipment is transferred to the overnight base and the fishing arranged around it. Pickup times and locations remain responsive to conditions.
WEATHER & BACKCOUNTRY COMMUNICATIONS
High winds, heavy rain, snow, or low cloud can prevent helicopter access. River conditions can also change the fishing plan. We consider alternatives on both sides of the South Island, but widespread weather may require a change of location, departure time, or fishing date.
We discuss these possibilities before you book and stay in contact as the trip approaches. Allowing spare time around your heli-fishing dates gives us more room to respond.
Our backcountry communications equipment includes Garmin inReach messaging devices, an Iridium satellite telephone, and a Personal Locator Beacon. These support weather updates, helicopter coordination, contact with home, and emergency communications where cellular coverage is unavailable.
YOUR TRIP FARE
Each trip is quoted individually, based on expected helicopter time, lodge nights, and meal requirements. Guiding, agreed transfers, beverages, and snacks are included, with accommodation, meals, and any wilderness overnight arrangements itemized in your proposal.
Your quote also identifies any additional equipment or travel costs. International flights, domestic air connections, and fishing licenses should be checked against the stated inclusions before booking. We help arrange the appropriate fishing licenses for your selected waters.
CONFIRMING YOUR BOOKING
A 50% deposit confirms your booking, with the remaining balance payable 60 days before departure. Payment can be made in US dollars or New Zealand dollars by arrangement, and credit-card payment is available.
Visitors to New Zealand must provide proof of comprehensive travel insurance and any required medical insurance when the final balance is due. Acceptance of the deposit is subject to our Terms and Conditions.
