THE SEPTEMBER 2027 PROGRAM

FANNING ISLAND FLY FISHING, DAY BY DAY

ARRIVAL IN KIRIBATI · WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2027

North American anglers normally depart Honolulu on Tuesday, September 14 and arrive in Kiribati on Wednesday after crossing the International Date Line. Guests traveling from New Zealand or Australia connect through Nadi and normally arrive early Wednesday. The group transfers to the required overnight accommodation before the scheduled Thursday flight to Fanning Island. Confirmed flight times, baggage requirements and transfers will be detailed in the final predeparture itinerary.

ARRIVAL ON FANNING · THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

The group takes the scheduled inter-island flight to Fanning Island, known locally as Tabuaeran. After arriving, guests transfer to Fanning Island Lodge, settle into their traditional beachfront buias and prepare their fishing equipment. The program includes an afternoon fishing session, subject to the confirmed flight time, weather and available daylight.

FOUR FULL FISHING DAYS · FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 TO MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

Four complete days are devoted to Fanning Island’s lagoon flats, channels and reef edges. Local boats move anglers between tide-dependent fishing areas, but most fishing is conducted on foot. Each day is adjusted around water movement, light, wind and the species being targeted.

FINAL MORNING AND RETURN · TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 TO WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22

Tuesday begins with a final morning fishing session before the afternoon flight from Fanning Island. The group completes the required overnight transit and connects with the international services departing on Wednesday, September 22. Together, the arrival afternoon, four complete days and final Tuesday session provide 5.5 guided fishing days.

FANNING ISLAND LODGE

Fanning Island Lodge provides simple traditional beachfront buias and direct access to the lagoon. This is a remote island fishing base rather than a conventional luxury lodge. Meals are prepared onsite, packed lunches travel with the boats, and the daily routine is built around the tides and fishing.

THE FISHING PROGRAM

Giant trevally and bonefish are the principal targets, with opportunities for triggerfish, bluefin trevally and bumphead parrotfish. Anglers should expect extended wading sessions over sand, coral and uneven lagoon terrain. Guides use local boats to reach the most suitable water before anglers continue on foot.

HOSTED TACKLE AND CHANNEL CAMPOUT

Guests can trial a range of premium-brand fly rods matched with Scientific Anglers fly lines during the week. The optional overnight Channel Campout is included at no extra charge, subject to local conditions and guide judgment. Camping and cooking equipment is held onsite, so guests need carry only the personal essentials specified in their predeparture information.

EXTENDING THE JOURNEY

This hosted program is focused entirely on Fanning Island. A second week on Fanning Island can be arranged before or after the hosted dates, creating a two-week Fanning package. Alternatively, anglers can add a separately priced week at Ikari House on Christmas Island. All extensions remain subject to flight, lodge and guide availability.

RODS, REELS AND LINES

Bring an 8- or 9-weight outfit with a tropical floating line or suitable sink-tip option for bonefish and general flats fishing. Giant trevally require an 11- or 12-weight rod, a robust saltwater reel with ample backing and two tropical GT fly lines. Coral edges can quickly damage lines, so carrying a backup is important. A second 8- or 9-weight outfit is generally more useful than relying on one general-purpose setup.

LEADERS AND FLIES

Pack 12, 16 and 20 lb saltwater leaders and fluorocarbon for bonefish, with 20 to 40 lb material for midsized species. Giant trevally leaders require 60, 80 and 100 lb fluorocarbon. A useful bonefish selection contains approximately 24 to 36 flies in sizes 4 and 6, with some size 8 patterns and larger Clouser-style options. Bring robust crab patterns for triggerfish and proven GT flies tied on heavy game hooks, including brush-style flies, black NYAPs, Slammers and poppers.

WADING AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Flats wading boots and neoprene or polypropylene liner socks are essential because of sharp coral and uneven footing. Bring backup polarized glasses, effective head and neck protection, two pairs of UPF 50 sun gloves, lightweight UPF 50 shirts and fishing pants, a light rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, a headlamp, backup power, a refillable water bottle and electrolyte sachets.

BAGGAGE AND FISHING TOOLS

The scheduled Fanning Island flight currently has a 15 kg or 33 lb baggage limit, which will be reconfirmed before departure. Compact packing is important. A roll-top waterproof bag can serve as both carry-on luggage and a flats bag. Include saltwater pliers, nippers, hemostats, finger protection, sports tape and a compact tackle-repair kit. GT flies should be kept dry in a sealed waterproof box or bag.

PAYMENT AND INSURANCE

A 50% deposit confirms the reservation, with the remaining balance due 90 days before departure. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended, and suitable emergency medical-evacuation cover is mandatory.

PLAN CAREFULLY AROUND THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE

Travel to Fanning Island begins with the weekly Fiji Airways service from Honolulu to Christmas Island (CXI). Because this route operates only once each week, missing the flight could mean missing the entire trip.

Plan to arrive in Honolulu no later than Monday and stay overnight before the Tuesday departure. Do not attempt to connect into Honolulu on Tuesday morning. Arriving a day early provides essential protection against domestic delays, canceled flights and misplaced baggage.

Although the flight from Honolulu to Christmas Island takes only a few hours, it crosses the International Date Line. You depart Hawaii on Tuesday and land on Christmas Island on Wednesday. From CXI, the group continues to Fanning Island according to the hosted-trip program.

The calendar works in reverse on the journey home. You depart Christmas Island on Wednesday, cross the International Date Line eastbound and arrive in Honolulu on Tuesday—the previous calendar day. Any onward flight from Honolulu should therefore be booked for Tuesday, preferably late afternoon or evening to allow a sensible connection margin.

Alternatively, stay overnight in Waikiki and continue home on Wednesday. If you choose that option, ask us for the Honolulu and Waikiki restaurant recommendations shared with us by local residents.

TRAVEL, PREPARATION AND BOOKING

PLAN YOUR FANNING & CHRISTMAS ISLAND HOSTED TRIP

TRIP ENQUIRIES AND FLIGHTS

Contact Isolation Outfitters with your preferred booking format, either the complete two-week program or the Fanning Island week only, together with your departure city, saltwater experience and room requirements. We will confirm availability and discuss the trip by phone or email before issuing the itinerary and deposit invoice. We will also confirm the recommended Fiji Airways connections and the Christmas Island transfer sequence. The inter-island service has restricted baggage capacity, and additional weight may be charged locally.

SKILL LEVEL AND TACKLE

You do not need to be an expert saltwater fly angler. Your host and local guides will assist throughout the trip, but proficient casting is required. You should be able to present weighted flies in wind using 7- to 9-weight and 10- to 12-weight single-handed rods with saltwater fly lines. Anglers should also be comfortable with extended wading over sand, coral and uneven lagoon terrain. The final information pack includes separate tackle, fly and packing recommendations for Christmas Island and Fanning Island.

WEATHER AND PACKING

Conditions close to the equator remain warm, typically around 80°F (27°C), but wind and sudden rain squalls are common. Pack a light rain jacket and a warm hoodie or vest for fast-boat travel. Strong sun protection is essential, including sunscreen, suitable fishing clothing, a Buff, gloves, a wide-brimmed hat and a spare, plus lip balm. Drinking water is carried during fishing days, and anglers must remain attentive to hydration throughout long sessions on the flats.

CONNECTIVITY AND EMERGENCY SUPPORT

Starlink is available on Fanning Island and at Ikari House. Isolation Outfitters also carries a Garmin inReach Mini 2 throughout the hosted trip, allowing essential messages or calls when required. In a serious medical emergency, the team can contact Global Rescue or the angler’s nominated evacuation provider directly and help coordinate urgent transport to Christmas Island and onward to the nearest suitable medical center.

BOOKING AND PAYMENT

The trip rate is quoted in US dollars and becomes fixed when your reservation is confirmed by the 50% deposit, regardless of later currency, fuel or travel-cost changes. The remaining balance is due 90 days before departure. Payment can be made through a secure link by major credit card, ACH or electronic transfer, or by wire to our US deposit account. Australian and New Zealand anglers may request payment in New Zealand dollars using the exchange rate applied by our payment platform. Payment of the deposit constitutes acceptance of our terms and conditions.

INSURANCE, ROOMING AND ADDITIONS

Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended and appropriate emergency medical-evacuation cover is required. The published rate is based on two anglers sharing a room. Single rooms at Ikari House may be requested at a revised fare, subject to availability, or a solo angler may share with another willing solo guest. Additional transfers, itinerary changes, optional activities or specialist fishing equipment arranged on your behalf are invoiced separately and must be paid before departure. Your Fanning+CXI information pack confirms inclusions, packing, tackle, gratuities, currency and practical requirements for both islands.
