Fishing Trips

Remote fly fishing involves more than reserving a lodge room and arriving with a rod. Flights must connect, transfers need to work, guides and boats have to be available, and the chosen dates must suit the river, tide or seasonal movement of the fish.

Before departure, we work through the travel programme, accommodation, equipment requirements and destination-specific preparation. During the trip, your host communicates with the lodge and guide team, helps keep the group organised and deals with the practical details that arise when travelling far from ordinary infrastructure.

Our hosts are experienced anglers who can assist with casting, knots, fly selection, tackle setup and unfamiliar techniques. The professional local guide remains responsible for each fishing day, while the host provides an additional layer of preparation, continuity and practical support around the entire expedition.

Some of our most enthusiastic hosted-trip anglers first contacted us because they wanted to fish a destination but did not have a complete group ready to travel. A hosted departure allows individual anglers to reserve a place knowing they will join a small group with a shared interest in serious fly fishing.

Pairs can travel together without needing to organise an entire private party, while established groups of friends can secure several places and still benefit from the planning, local relationships and additional camaraderie of a hosted programme.

Most groups are limited to between two and six anglers. Skybound South, for example, is an intimate New Zealand heli-fishing expedition for two rods, while our lodge and flats weeks generally accommodate no more than six. Small numbers protect the fishing experience, provide better access to guides and give anglers the chance to properly get to know the people sharing the week.

There is no single Isolation Outfitters hosted trip. One departure might involve a helicopter lifting two anglers into New Zealand's South Island backcountry to sight-fish for large wild brown trout. Another could be based beside the cool rivers of Northern Patagonia at La Pilarica or Challhuaquen Lodge. Farther south, the Río Menéndez at Wuijoor offers intimate, technical fishing for resident and sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego.

The saltwater programme ranges from combined Fanning and Christmas Island expeditions to Aitutaki's powerful lagoon bonefish and Mexico's permit, tarpon and bonefish fisheries. Some weeks are intended for accomplished anglers seeking technically demanding fishing, while others offer a supportive introduction to a new species or style.

Where lodge space, guide availability and seasonal conditions allow, we generally schedule at least two hosted opportunities at a lodge or destination during the programme. That may mean separate Patagonia lodge weeks, two Xcalak options, spring and autumn Aitutaki adventures, or several Fanning Island departures shaped around different tides and fishing objectives. These are not identical weeks repeated for convenience. Each date is selected around the fishery.

Good equipment matters most when replacing it is difficult. Before every hosted expedition, we provide destination-specific advice covering rods, reels, fly lines, leaders, flies, clothing and essential personal equipment. We also travel with practical backup items and the small repair materials that can save a fishing day in a remote location.

On selected trips, anglers may have access to premium rods, reels, lines and other equipment through our relationships with leading fly-fishing brands. This can be especially useful for someone trying saltwater fly fishing for the first time or considering equipment for a new species. Availability varies, so the individual trip page and pre-trip information remain the authoritative source for what is supplied, what may be borrowed and what each angler should bring.

Preparation also includes an honest discussion about fitness, wading, casting expectations and the character of the fishing. A heli-accessed New Zealand headwater, a windy Pacific flat and a Tierra del Fuego sea-trout river each ask something different of an angler. Our role is to help you select the right trip and arrive ready for it.

We coordinate with lodges, guides, transport operators and local partners before the group arrives. We confirm the fishing programme, transfers, accommodation and meal arrangements, and ask about dietary requirements and personal preferences that may affect the trip.
