WORLD’S END LODGE,
RIO IRIGOYEN

the uttermost part of the earth

What truly sets World’s End apart is not only the size of its fish, but also the setting in which they swim. Unlike the windswept steppe that defines other sea trout rivers such as the Rio Grande to the north, the intimate Irigoyen meanders through exotic moorland and forests of lenga and ñire beech.

This secluded environment teems with wildlife, offering anglers a fishing experience as rich in atmosphere as it is in opportunity.

With more than 25 miles of private river access, including striking coastal scenery, World’s End Lodge offers an angling environment found nowhere else in the world.

Tucked away in the remote southern archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, World’s End Lodge is perfectly positioned on one of the most unique fisheries in all of South America: the Río Irigoyen and its tributary, the Malenguena.

These rivers harbor an extraordinary number of trophy sea-run brown trout, many exceeding 20 pounds. Until recently, they remained largely unexplored, but word of their potential is quickly drawing international acclaim. We can take you to World’s End Lodge, but first a warning that bookings must be made over a year out to secure a spot on the river.

WORLD’s END LODGE, RIO IRIGOYEN,
TIERRA DEL FUEGO

WORLD CLASS SEA-RUN BROWN TROUT AT WORLD’S END

At the far southern reaches of Tierra del Fuego, where the forest meets the sea and the rivers flow through untouched wilderness, lies World’s End Lodge. Remote, intimate, and unlike any other sea trout destination, this lodge offers access to the Río Irigoyen and its tributary, the Malenguena –two rivers that until recently were virtually unknown to the outside world.

Here, sea-run browns well over 20 pounds move through a river corridor sheltered by lenga and ñire forests, a stark contrast to the windswept steppe that defines the Rio Grande further north. With over 25 miles of private water, the fishing is as exclusive as it is productive, and the setting – a mix of coastal vistas, moorlands, and dense austral forest – is utterly unique in South America.

Fishing is technical, intimate, and deeply rewarding. Single-handed and compact Trout Spey rods are the tools of choice, with long leaders and delicate presentations often required. Few experiences in fly fishing rival bringing a 20-pound sea trout to hand on a size 12 nymph in a narrow, tree-lined pool. Adding to the adventure, the Irigoyen estuary holds powerful robalo (a cousin of the snook) that routinely push 20 pounds – an exhilarating saltwater bonus available from December through mid-February.

CLIMATE AND CONDITIONS

This corner of Tierra del Fuego is often called ‘the uttermost part of the earth,’ and its weather lives up to the title—unpredictable and fast-changing. Anglers should come prepared with high-quality waders, waterproof raingear, and layered clothing. That said, World’s End’s forested setting provides welcome shelter from the fierce winds that define the Rio Grande and Rio Gallegos further north, making both casting and time on the water considerably more comfortable.

Summer temperatures generally range between 10° and 20°C, with occasional rain or fog blowing in from the sea.

TRAVELING TO WORLD’S END LODGE

Depart US Hub Airport

You’ll take an evening overnight flight from a major US gateway (eg. Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, or New York) non stop to Buenos Aires (EZE). Flight time is ~10–11 hours.

Buenos Aires

You’ll enjoy a morning arrival into Buenos Aires and can transfer into the city in less than 45 minutes. We recommend checking into a boutique hotel in Recoleta or Palermo. Afternoon and evening at leisure – walk leafy boulevards, enjoy Argentine steak and Malbec, or even take in some tango at a local milonga!

Ushuaia

Take a morning flight from Buenos Aires (AEP domestic airport) to Ushuaia (USH). Flight time is 3.5–4 hours.

You’ve arrived at the southernmost city in the world – a vibrant port framed by the Beagle Channel and snowcapped peaks. Depending on schedules, there’s often a short window to enjoy a waterfront lunch or stroll the main street, soaking up the novelty of being at the ‘end of the world.’

From Ushuaia, private vehicle transfer to World’s End Lodge: ~4–5 hours across wild, windswept Tierra del Fuego. Your evening arrival at the lodge involves a welcome dinner, orientation, and a tackle discussion ahead of your first full fishing day on the Rio Irigoyen.

THE EXPERIENCE

Days at World’s End follow a comfortable rhythm: hearty breakfasts, morning sessions on foot or by rugged ARGO ATV, lunch and a siesta back at the cabins, then afternoons on the water until dusk.

Evenings are spent with fine meals and fine wines, trading stories of fish landed and lost at the uttermost part of the earth.

LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY

World’s End Lodge sits on the Río Irigoyen in the far southeastern corner of Tierra del Fuego, about 200 kilometers northeast of Ushuaia by road and 180 kilometers southeast of Río Grande. This is one of the most remote and atmospheric settings in all of Patagonia, where forest meets the Atlantic and the river winds through moorland and beech forest before reaching the sea.

Getting there is part of the adventure. Travelers fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia – an unforgettable approach over the Beagle Channel – followed by a four to five hour drive across windswept landscapes to reach the lodge. The journey underlines the sense of isolation and sets the stage for the experience ahead.

DAILY SCHEDULE

08:00 – Breakfast
09:00 – Morning fishing session
13:00 – Lunch and siesta at the cabins
17:00 – Afternoon fishing session until dusk

Fishing hours shift slightly with the season, but anglers can expect at least eight hours on the water each day.

The siesta, whilst downplayed by some less-knowledgeable anglers, allows for down time it the hardest part of the fishing day, allowing full energy to be deployed in the evening when the spooky sea trout are at their most active.

ACCOMODATION

The lodge blends rustic character with quiet comfort. Guests stay in single-occupancy cabins with private bathrooms, a warm drying room for waders and gear, and a central dining lodge perched above the river. Meals showcase the best of Argentine cuisine – lamb, steak, fish, and foraged mushrooms – paired with excellent local wines. Beer and wine are included, and guests are welcome to bring their own favorite tipple.

Surrounded by lenga forest and open steppe, the lodge offers a striking backdrop with abundant wildlife. Wild horses, condors, foxes, and even beavers are regular visitors. Connectivity is limited to satellite internet, and there is no cell service – ensuring that the focus remains firmly on fishing, food, and the unbroken wilderness of Tierra del Fuego.

FISHING PROGRAM

Guests travel between beats in rugged ARGO 6×6 ATVs. The rivers are easily wadeable, with most fishing done using 7 or 8wt single-hand rods or compact Trout Spey rods paired with multi-tip lines. Because of the river’s smaller size, fishing can at times be technical, with success often hinging on delicate presentations, long leaders, and small flies. Landing a 20-pound brown on a size 12 nymph is the sort of achievement anglers will never forget.

The Irigoyen also provides a unique saltwater option: hard-fighting robalo (a South Atlantic cousin of the snook) that can reach 20 pounds. Resident brown trout and nearby streams with healthy brook trout populations round out the diverse fishing opportunities.

AN EPIC JOURNEY TO TWO BUCKET LIST DESTINATIONS

For anglers who truly want to make the most of Patagonia, World’s End Lodge pairs beautifully as the second week of a two-week itinerary. Begin on the legendary Rio Grande at Wuijoor Lodge or Las Segadas Lodge, and then travel south into the forests for a completely different – and equally exclusive – sea trout experience at World’s End. Or, if giant rainbows are more your style, cap your trip with a week at Jurassic Lake Lodge on Lago Strobel, home to the most prolific trophy rainbow fishery on the planet. But you must book a year out – we can’t stress this enough!

Isolation Outfitters can help you design the most efficient itinerary – minimizing transfers, maximizing time on the water, and stitching together the lodges and rivers that best fit your angling ambitions.

SERIOUS TACKLE

This is technical fishing with delicate presentations amidst fallen trees and southern winds. Expect to hook 7lb+ sea-run trout regularly with the right technique and patience. Fish in the 12-15lb range are common, and 20lb+ trophies are regularly caught.

Trout Spey: A 4–7wt Trout Spey rod (11+ ft) with a floating line and intermediate to heavy sink tip is recommended.

Technique: Cast down-and-across at 70° (or 90° for streamers), mend upstream to sink the fly, then swing and strip to trigger strikes. Keep tension on the fly.

Single Handed: Fast-action 7-8wt rods with floating lines and short tips are great for small nymph presentation.

Reels: Bring quality reels with strong drag, low start-up inertia, and backup spools for varied setups.

Tippet: Use 0X fluoro or mono (0.028mm); go 16–20lb for fishing towards dusk when fish are less leader shy.

The lodge holds spare rods, reels, lines and flies in case of lost luggage or extra needs.

We will provide a detailed packing/gear list on booking confirmation.
