SOUTHERN PATAGONIA, FROM TIERRA DEL FUEGO TO SANTA CRUZ

Southern Patagonia crosses Argentina and Chile, extending from the remote rivers of Tierra del Fuego to the open steppe, glacial lakes and migratory fisheries of Santa Cruz. This is a region of powerful sea-run trout, wild landscapes and carefully controlled fishing access.

The Río Grande and its tributaries are central to the program. On the Chilean side of Isla Grande, Las Segadas Lodge provides exclusive access to private upper Río Grande water, alongside resident-trout fisheries, lakes, spring creeks and seasonal king salmon.

Across the border in Argentina, Wuijoor Lodge sits beside the Río Menéndez, an intimate and highly productive tributary of the Río Grande. Farther south, World’s End Lodge opens the forest-lined Río Irigoyen—one of Tierra del Fuego’s most remote and distinctive sea-run brown trout fisheries.

North of the Strait of Magellan, the Río Gallegos, Río Santa Cruz and Lago Strobel extend the journey onto the continental mainland, adding further sea-run brown trout, Atlantic steelhead and exceptionally large wild rainbows.

Each lodge and fishery works as a destination in its own right. They can also be combined into a longer Southern Patagonia itinerary, with Isolation Outfitters coordinating the fishing, accommodation, transfers and connections between regions. We can also add a Northern Patagonia fishing program to your itinerary.

Rio Grande, Chile

The Río Grande begins on the Chilean side of Isla Grande before crossing Tierra del Fuego and continuing through Argentina to the Atlantic. Its upper reaches provide private access to one of Patagonia’s most celebrated sea-run brown trout systems.

Las Segadas Lodge combines the main river with the Río Blanco and a varied estancia program encompassing spring creeks, lakes and lagoons. Sea-run browns are the principal later-season attraction, while seasonal king salmon, resident browns and rainbows, and optional brook-trout water broaden the fishing.

RÍO GALLEGOS, ARGENTINA

On the continental mainland, the Río Gallegos crosses the open Santa Cruz steppe before reaching the Atlantic. Its sea-run brown trout reward patient fishing, accurate presentations and guides who understand the river’s changing height, color and wind conditions.

TIERRA DEL FUEGO AND SANTA CRUZ

Rio MEnendez, Argentina

The Río Menéndez is the Río Grande’s largest tributary, but its smaller scale creates a more intimate and technical fishing experience. Pools, bends and structured banks can be approached with single-handed rods, careful positioning and lighter presentations than are commonly associated with Tierra del Fuego.

Wuijoor Lodge sits beside 27 kilometres of private Menéndez water, with additional opportunities on the lower Río Ona. Its riverside location allows guides to respond quickly to changing light, wind and fish movement throughout the day.

RÍO SANTA CRUZ, ARGENTINA

Flowing from Lago Argentino across the Santa Cruz steppe, the Río Santa Cruz is a vast, powerful glacial river holding an extraordinary Atlantic steelhead population. Long runs, strong currents and migratory fish make this a demanding and distinctive Southern Patagonia expedition.

Rio Irigoyen, Argentina

The forest-lined Río Irigoyen reaches the Atlantic on the southeastern coast of Tierra del Fuego. Its confined channels, submerged timber and intimate pools demand accurate casting and close control of the fly, particularly when targeting sea-run browns moving through the lower river.

World’s End Lodge provides the base for this remote fishery, combining technical fishing with the extraordinary isolation of Tierra del Fuego’s Atlantic coast.

LAGO STROBEL, ARGENTINA

Lago Strobel – widely known as Jurassic Lake – adds an entirely different experience to a Southern Patagonia itinerary. Its wild rainbows can reach exceptional proportions, with fishing shaped by powerful wind, exposed shorelines and the movements of trout between the lake and its tributaries.

A stay here can be combined with Tierra del Fuego or another Santa Cruz fishery to pursue trophy rainbows and migratory trout within one journey.
