La Pilarica Lodge
We're pleased to announce a new partnership with La Pilarica Lodge, a boutique fly-fishing lodge in Argentina's Chubut Province that offers access to some of the finest trout water in northern Patagonia.
Located in Villa Lago Rivadavia, around 90 minutes from Esquel Airport, La Pilarica sits on the banks of the Río Carrileufú. Within a short drive are the Rivadavia and Arrayanes rivers, along with spring creeks, alpine lakes including Laguna Larga, and a range of smaller waters, giving guides the flexibility to match each day's fishing to conditions and the interests of their guests.
It's this variety that captured our attention.
Rather than following a fixed weekly Saturday–Friday program, each day's fishing is shaped by water levels, weather, hatches and the preferences of the anglers staying at the lodge. One day might be spent drifting a broad freestone river beneath the Andes, while the next could involve wading a spring creek or exploring Laguna Larga in search of larger brown trout. Every week develops a little differently.
The lodge itself follows the same philosophy.
La Pilarica accommodates a maximum of ten guests at any one time, creating an atmosphere that's closer to staying in a private home than a commercial fishing operation. We prefer to have a maximum of 6-8 anglers each week across five comfortable guest rooms. Shared dining and welcoming communal spaces encourage guests to settle in, compare notes from the river and enjoy the slower rhythm that makes this part of Patagonia so appealing.
Dinner deserves a mention of its own.
Chef Iñaki prepares a changing menu built around regional ingredients, Patagonian lamb and Argentine wines, with everyone gathering around a single table at the end of the day. Expect fishing conversations to begin upon arrival and end well after dessert.
The fishing reflects the diversity of the landscape.
Wild brown trout are the principal drawcard, supported by excellent populations of rainbow trout, brook trout and even landlocked Atlantic salmon. Dry flies, nymphs and streamers all have their place depending on the season, while both drift boats and walk-and-wade fishing allow guides to match the approach to the water rather than the other way around. What impressed us most, however, wasn't a particular river or a memorable fish.
It was the way La Pilarica operates.
Limiting guest numbers isn't a marketing slogan here – it's how the lodge has always worked. Smaller groups mean greater flexibility, less pressure on the rivers and more time for the guides to work alongside guests to maximize their results on the water. The week feels personal, relaxed and centered on great fishing and stunning scenery rather than tight schedules.
