FLY FISHING KIRITIMATI FROM IKARI HOUSE
Christmas Island has earned its place among saltwater fly fishing’s essential destinations. Kiritimati Lagoon covers more than 125 square miles, creating an extraordinary mosaic of white sand, coral edges, channels and ocean-side flats. For the traveling angler, the appeal is not simply the scale of the fishery. It is the chance to spend a full week sight-fishing in a landscape where the tides set the rhythm and every day can produce a completely different encounter.
Bonefish are the foundation of the experience, but they are only the beginning. Giant trevally, bluefin trevally, triggerfish and milkfish all add possibility to a day on the flats. Some sessions are built around steady wading and precise presentations to cruising bones. Others demand a heavier rod, an alert guide and an immediate response when a GT appears at the edge of the flat.
KIRITIMATI: THE NAME BEHIND CHRISTMAS ISLAND
Kiritimati is the Gilbertese spelling of ‘Christmas’ and is commonly pronounced approximately ‘Kirismas’. The atoll was named Christmas Island by Captain James Cook after his arrival on Christmas Eve in 1777. Today, its scale, isolation and extraordinary lagoon make it one of the best-known flats fisheries in the Pacific.
Ikari is the Gilbertese word for ‘bonefish’ – a fitting name for the lodge that has become our preferred base on the island.
WHY WE CHOOSE IKARI HOUSE
Ikari House sits beside the lagoon at Ronton, also known as London, close to the daily boat-launching point. That location matters. Less time spent reaching the boats means more useful time with a rod in hand, and the lodge’s fast boats provide access to a wide spread of fishing areas across Kiritimati.
The lodge has 12 air-conditioned guest rooms with private bathrooms, daily room and laundry service, and practical areas for rinsing and storing fishing equipment. At its center is a traditional thatched maneaba overlooking the lagoon – a relaxed dining room, bar and gathering place where the group can compare notes after a day on the flats.
Isolation Outfitters works closely with the Ikari House management and guiding teams. Our programs include experienced local guides, carefully planned boat and guide rotations, and additional touches such as beer and wine with meals, fresh sashimi and mantis shrimp when available, and dining adjusted to suit our guests. The comfort is intentionally simple, but the hospitality, beachside setting and proximity to the fishery make Ikari House an excellent angling base.

A WEEK BUILT AROUND THE TIDES
A fishing week on Christmas Island is varied by design. Guides consider the tides, wind and target species before deciding where each boat should begin. Anglers may wade firm white-sand flats for bonefish, work broken coral country for triggerfish, or carry a heavier setup for giant trevally along channels and deeper edges.
The fishing rewards preparation. Accurate casts in wind, quiet wading, fast line management and the ability to change rods without delay all create more opportunities. Our hosted weeks add useful support around that process. We help guests prepare before departure, carry additional premium rods, reels and fly lines, and work with the lodge team to give the group a balanced program across the week.
There is also a strong social rhythm. Early breakfasts lead into long days on the water; evenings return the group to the maneaba for a cold drink, fresh seafood when available and the inevitable retelling of close calls and memorable fish.
PART OF THE KIRIBATI EXPERIENCE
A visit to Kiritimati is more than a sequence of fishing days. The island’s villages, churches, music, dancing and generous hospitality provide an authentic connection with Kiribati life. Local guides bring knowledge developed over years on the lagoon, reading subtle changes in water, weather and fish behavior that visiting anglers could never learn in a single week.
We ask guests to approach the island with curiosity and respect. Kiritimati is remote, resources are limited and life operates at a different pace. Those qualities are part of the island experience.

Hosted trips are limited to small groups, and individual weeks may fill well before departure. We can also arrange independent stays at Ikari House outside these hosted dates, subject to flights, room availability and suitable guiding.
PLANNING FOR A REMOTE PACIFIC FISHERY
Kiritimati is reached by scheduled international flights via Fiji Airways on the Honolulu to Nadi, Fiji route. Services are limited, and your flight connections to and from the US Mainland travel must allow for the International Date Line, fixed arrival days and the possibility of disruption. We provide confirmed guests with flight guidance, packing information, fly and tackle recommendations, and practical advice for the island.
Comprehensive travel insurance with medical-evacuation coverage is essential. Kiritimati is remote and local medical facilities are limited. Anglers should also travel with reliable sun protection, suitable flats footwear, personal medications and enough essential tackle to remain fishing if luggage is delayed.
Christmas Island is not a polished resort destination. It is something better for the right angler: a vast, fish-rich atoll, a highly experienced guiding culture and a week shaped almost entirely by tides, wind and the next fish in view.
