Lake Brunner Fly Fishing Lodge

Lake Brunner Fly Fishing Lodge, New Zealand

Lake Brunner Lodge is a boutique property on the tranquil shores of Lake Brunner, surrounded by native beech forest and close to some of the South Island’s most diverse trout waters. Unlike the crowded rivers of Nelson or Central Otago, this quiet corner of the West Coast offers anglers space, solitude, and genuine wilderness fishing within easy reach of the lodge.

The lodge features comfortable guest rooms with king or twin bedding, private en-suite bathrooms, and sweeping lake or garden views. Common areas include a spacious lounge with an open fire, a well-stocked bar, and an outdoor deck where guests gather to swap stories while watching the sun set across the lake.

Thanks to its location and atmosphere, Lake Brunner Lodge has historically been a favorite base for anglers seeking both comfort and authentic New Zealand fly fishing. Dozens of rivers and streams – ranging from spring creeks to remote freestone headwaters – are accessible from the lodge, giving guests flexibility from early October through to late April.

Dining at the lodge emphasizes hearty West Coast hospitality, with locally sourced produce, fresh-caught seafood, and an excellent wine list showcasing New Zealand’s top grape-growing regions. Breakfasts and packed lunches are tailored to anglers’ schedules, while dinner is a more relaxed affair shared around the lodge’s communal dining room.

Our fly fishing program allows for two, three or four days of guided days near the lodge, and an option to heli-transfer into the nearby headwaters for trophy brown trout.

Book Lake Brunner Lodge with Isolation Outfitters and you’ll enjoy a seamless fly fishing experience — expert guiding, access to lightly pressured waters, and a welcoming lodge that feels more like a private retreat than a hotel. Compare a few days here to the more familiar South Island circuits and you’ll quickly see the difference in value and fishery.

This region is a welcome alternative to the more heavily-fished rivers of Nelson or Central Otago, offering anglers true solitude, sight-fishing for large brown trout, and a genuine sense of wilderness. With excellent road and helicopter access, a wide variety of waters are available regardless of whether you arrive early or late season into New Zealand.

From Christchurch: 3-hour drive west across Arthur’s Pass, or take the scenic TranzAlpine train to Greymouth with lodge pick-up.
From Queenstown: 6-hour drive via Wanaka and Haast Pass
From Hokitika or Greymouth: 30–45 minutes by car; transfers can be arranged through Isolation Outfitters.

FISHING PROGRAM

The West Coast is renowned for trophy brown trout in gin-clear waters, where anglers stalk fish by sight in small freestone streams or larger backcountry rivers. Guided fishing is arranged on a per-day basis, giving flexibility to fish local waters, explore further afield, or book a helicopter transfer into remote headwaters.

The area provides some stunning spring creeks that remain clear after rains, clearwater freestone streams with excellent late season spawning runs from the lake and, above tight gorges lies some very special pocket water and trophy browns. You should expect to get multiple shots at 7-8lb+ brown trout daily in this high country water.

We’ll provide a recommended gear and fly list at the time of booking. Isolation Outfitters can arrange for ultra-premium flyfishing tackle, Patagonia waders and Forra wading boots to be available for your use during your time at Lake Brunner Lodge. Just give us your request and your sizes. We can also arrange high quality Skwala apparel to keep you warm and dry in the hills. Our guides carry cameras for hero shots and satellite messaging devices for emergencies. We’ll carry lunch and safety equipment, allowing you to focus on the fishing.

We recommend staying at least two nights at Lake Brunner Lodge, perhaps before relocating further north to Lewis Pass or south to the Haast area to explore those excellent fishing locations. GENERAL INFORMATION

TRIP ENQUIRIES

Please contact us by sending us a message via our Contact Form, or calling us to discuss availability.

We will share much more trip information with you via email and phone to discuss this adventure, answer your questions and understand more about what you’re looking for from this trip.

SKILL LEVEL

You do NOT need to be an expert fly angler to enjoy this trip. We, together with your guide, will assist you every step of the way to improve your technique and help you connect with fish. However, you should be proficient at stalking large trout in clear waters and skilled at casting – able to confidently cast a large weighted nymph in variable wind conditions.

WEATHER

New Zealand’s West Coast is famous for its lush rainforest, and the variable weather that sustains it. From October to April, anglers can expect daytime highs of 60–75°F (15–24°C), with cooler mornings and evenings. Rainfall is frequent but often passes quickly, creating fresh flows that keep rivers productive and the trout active.

A quality rain jacket is therefore essential, along with layered merino or other warm clothing so you can adjust to changing conditions throughout the day. Sun protection remains important: bring sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, a cap or wide-brimmed hat, and a dull-colored Buff® or similar face/neck covering. Breathable wading gear is recommended, and lightweight fishing gloves and a chapstick will help with wind and sun exposure.

We’ll provide drinking water and lunches in the field – just come prepared to embrace a little ‘West Coast weather’ as part of the adventure and you won’t be caught out.

SATELLITE PHONE/MESSAGING

On our hosted trips, we carry multiple Garmin Inreach Mini2 messaging devices, an Iridium Extreme Satellite Telephone and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) on every trip. You can call home, send messages to cellphones as you wish, or message between teams on the flats.

In the event of a medical emergency, the lodge will have direct contact with Global Rescue (or whomever you are insured with) for urgent evacuation to the nearest medical centre.
